Accessibility
Accessibility on electroculturegardening.org means anyone, on any device or assistive technology, should be able to read the history, follow the evidence and set up a fair garden test.
Our approach
We aim for the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at level AA. The site is built phone-first, because many readers check a guide in the garden, and every page uses the same layout so the menu, sections and questions are always in the same place. Accessibility is part of how each page is built, not a check added at the end.
What we do
- Clear structure. One main heading per page, question headings in order, an "On this page" list on longer guides, and a skip link to the main content.
- Described images. Every informative image has alt text saying what it shows. Infographic descriptions repeat every label and number in the image, so nothing is lost without the picture.
- Keyboard access. Links, buttons, the menu and the question lists work with a keyboard alone, with a visible focus outline.
- Readable text. Text and button colours were measured against WCAG AA contrast ratios, and pages zoom normally.
- Tables that stack. On narrow screens, tables turn into labelled cards instead of scrolling sideways.
- Nothing in the way. No pop-ups, autoplaying media or timed content. Videos load only when you press a labelled play button.
- Plain words. Short sentences, technical terms such as millivolt or atmospheric potential gradient explained on first use, and evidence levels written out in words.
Known limits
Some figures are scans from documents printed between 1898 and 1927. A few have faded text or labels printed sideways; the alt text and the surrounding paragraph describe what they show. Store links open pages on thrivegarden.com, and videos play in YouTube's player; both have their own designs and accessibility. We fix problems as we find them.
